Tanzania is on the brink of a transportation revolution with the introduction of its new electric train system, poised to serve the bustling populations of Dar es Salaam and Dodoma while revolutionizing regional freight logistics.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, alongside government officials and civil society representatives, recently embarked on the inaugural test run of Tanzania’s electric train, covering the 540-kilometre journey from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma in less than four hours, a vast improvement over the previous 12-hour journey.
Costing over $14 billion, the electric train is equipped with advanced infrastructure, including Wi-Fi connectivity and a speed of up to 160 km/h, set to link Tanzania with neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Expected to commence commercial service by July 2024, the electric train project, part of the broader Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) initiative, promises to facilitate trade and connectivity across East Africa, enhancing regional economic cooperation and development.
Beyond its economic benefits, the electric train represents a significant stride towards sustainability, aligning with Tanzania’s commitment to a greener future while symbolizing progress and empowerment for Tanzanian communities by improving access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
With innovation and determination driving its momentum, Tanzania’s electric train project is poised to redefine transportation dynamics across East Africa, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s future.
