  • Includes a Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university, facilitating learning from U.S. citizens and peers, exploration of various industries, and engagement in a Summit with fellow African leaders.
  • Offers opportunities to meet with U.S. government, civic, and business leaders, expanding networks and insights.
  • Aims to strengthen fellows’ work through novel connections, skills, and ideas, while integrating them into a global Alumni Network for innovative problem-solving.

 Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should be aged 25 to 35 by the application deadline.
  • Not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Eligible for a U.S. J-1 visa.
  • Not affiliated with U.S. government employees or their immediate families.
  • Proficient in English (including guidance for deaf applicants).
  • Citizens and residents of eligible African countries.
  • Shouldn’t be former Mandela Washington Fellowship alumni.
  • Fellows must not bring dependents (spouses, children) during the Fellowship.

Selection Process and Criteria:

  • Merit-based competition involving application review and semi-finalist interviews by U.S. embassies/consulates in home countries.
