A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the $16 million World Bank-funded Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project (RESPITE) has been signed, marking a significant milestone for renewable energy in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Chad, and Togo.
The MoU, formalized at the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) in Monrovia on July 30, 2024, involves collaboration between the LEC, the World Bank, and International Consolidated Contractors Offshore SAL.
A media report suggests that the project, identified as RESPITE-RCU-001-GO-RFB, aims to design, supply, install, and commission a solar park in Liberia to enhance the region’s energy infrastructure.
LEC CEO Monie Ralph Captan and International Consolidated Contractors CEO Uhab Sernap signed the MoU, with Captan highlighting the project’s importance for Liberia, particularly during the dry season. The initiative is expected to be completed within two years, with significant progress in one year.
Captan also mentioned plans to expand the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant. The RESPITE project aims to bolster the region’s power supply and support economic growth through sustainable energy solutions.
