South Korean electric vehicle (EV) battery maker SK On is in talks with automakers to supply prismatic batteries, expanding its product line beyond its existing pouch-type batteries.
This move comes as the company seeks to adapt to a slowdown in global EV demand.
SK On, a unit of energy group SK Innovation, currently supplies EV batteries to major automakers such as Ford, Hyundai, and Volkswagen.
SK On’s chief spokesperson, Ko Chang-Kook, confirmed that discussions with multiple automakers are underway to secure prismatic battery supply deals.
“We are having talks with automakers who will take our prismatic batteries … we will now have the opportunity to diversify our product portfolios sooner than later,” Ko told Reuters.
While Ko did not disclose the names of the automakers involved, he mentioned that the company has completed the development of prismatic battery technology and is ready to begin production once agreements are finalized.
Currently, there are three main types of lithium-ion batteries used in EVs: prismatic, cylindrical, and pouch-type.
Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Prismatic and cylindrical batteries are encased in hard materials, whereas pouch-type batteries are protected by sealed flexible foils.
SK On, which currently produces only pouch-type batteries, is also developing cylindrical batteries, which are widely used by Tesla.
