The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) extends its condolences to the family, leadership, and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the entire OPEC Family, following the tragic death of H.E. Ayatollah Dr. Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, an OPEC member.
President Raisi’s death, along with that of the foreign minister and other officials in a helicopter crash on Sunday in northwestern Iran, comes amid Iran’s internal challenges and its strained international relations.
In a statement issued on Monday, May 20, 2024, OPEC Secretary General H.E. Haitham Al Ghais expressed: “It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that we have learned of the tragic passing of H.E. Ayatollah Dr. Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and other senior government officials.

“In these difficult times, on behalf of myself and all the staff at the OPEC Secretariat, I extend my condolences and sympathy to the esteemed leadership and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the families of H.E. President Raisi and other officials.”
H.E. Al Ghais had met with H.E. President Raisi in May 2023 in Tehran, Iran, during the Secretary General’s first official visit to the OPEC Founding Member. Their meeting focused on Iran’s role in the global oil and energy markets, as well as future investment prospects in Iran’s oil industry.
