NSCDC Pursues Illegal Miners Defying Ban in Nigeria

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is intensifying efforts to apprehend illegal miners who persist in defying the ban on mining activities in Borno State. Farouq Musa-Boyi, the NSCDC Commandant in the state, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Maiduguri.

Most of the illegal mining activities are concentrated in Bayo Local Government Area, particularly in Wuyo, Jaradali, and Balbaya villages, where unregistered artisans have caused significant environmental damage. The minerals targeted by illegal miners in Borno include Feldspar, Limestone, Kaolin, Potash, Iron-Ore, and others.

Despite the state government’s ban on illegal mining and warnings of severe consequences for defaulters, the illicit activities persist. The NSCDC is determined to clamp down on these offenders and ensure they face justice, Musa-Boyi affirmed.

The ban on mining activities in Borno State was initially announced in October 2023 by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, as part of efforts to curb insecurity. However, the federal government, represented by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, later contested the state’s authority to impose such bans.

The NSCDC’s pursuit of illegal miners underscores ongoing challenges in enforcing regulations and maintaining security in mining communities.
