The Imo State Government has granted Orashi Electricity Company Limited an interim license to generate, transmit, and distribute uninterrupted electricity within the state.
The license was officially awarded during a ceremony in Owerri, the state capital, with the Commissioner for Power and Electrification, Nwabueze Oguchienti, highlighting the significance of this development for the state.
“This marks a crucial step forward in our efforts to ensure constant and reliable electricity,” Oguchienti stated.
He emphasized that this move is part of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration’s broader initiative to address the state’s inconsistent power supply.
Oguchienti explained that the state government has been working towards taking over the electricity market in Imo State.
This effort was initiated following the constitutional amendment last year and the enactment of the Electricity Act of 2023, which grants states the authority to manage their power sectors.
The commissioner noted that the necessary legal framework is being established to make this project a reality, including the formation of a regulatory commission.
“I can assure you that in the next year, it will be a different story in the state because we are committed to a changed narrative when it comes to power supply,” Oguchienti said.
He added that this development aims to end the state’s dependence on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, promising a significant improvement in power reliability for Imo State residents.
