In the first quarter of 2024, Nigeria experienced a 9.1% decrease in electricity generation, dropping from 9,789.87 GWh in Q4 2023 to 8,887.93 GWh.
The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in a report attributed the decline to reduced capacities at 17 of the 27 grid-connected power plants.
A media report suggests that the average hourly power generation also fell by 8.22%, from 4,433.82 MWh/h in Q4 2023 to 4,069.57 MWh/h.
Generation capacity across all power plants decreased by 13.68% to 4,249.10 MW in Q1 2024. Despite this, energy offtake by Distribution Companies (DisCos) dropped by 11.56%, from 3,713.16 MWh/h to 3,283.87 MWh/h, although revenue collection improved by 5.32%, reaching N291.62 billion of the N368.65 billion billed.
