Nigerian Minister Announces Govt Target of Cheaper LPG, CNG Energy Sources for Railway Services

Saidu Alkali, the Nigerian Minister of Transportation has on Thursday revealed that the Nigerian Railway Corporation would transition its services from diesel locomotives to more cost-effective options such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG)

The announcement was contained in a statement released by Olujimi Oyetomi, the Media Director at the Ministry.

Alkali emphasized the comparative advantages of LPG and CNG over diesel or locomotive energy sources, citing the potential cost savings and environmental benefits.

He reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to delivering an efficient, affordable, and sustainable transportation system for Nigerians, particularly in light of the recent removal of fuel subsidies.

This initiative follows discussions between the Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Railway Corporation, and the De-Sadel consortium, which proposed the LNG-CNG alternative during joint deliberations at the Ministry’s headquarters.
