The Ekiti State government has firmly rejected a plan by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to impose a nine-hour daily power outage for two months starting July 1.
The government criticized the plan for its potentially severe economic and social impacts on residents. TCN and BEDC announced the outages to perform critical maintenance on the 132kV Akure-Osogbo transmission line.
However, the Nigerian The Nation Newspaper quoted the Ekiti State Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utility, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, stating that the state was neither informed nor consulted, and demanded an immediate suspension of the plan.
He called for an emergency meeting with TCN, BEDC, and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to find a less disruptive solution.
The commissioner emphasized the need for collaboration to ensure minimal adverse effects on the state’s electricity supply.
