New York Achieves Record Levels of Wind and Solar Generation

New York reached unprecedented levels of wind and solar generation recently, setting new records, according to the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO).

According to Reuters, on March 9, wind power facilities in the state generated 2,176 megawatts during the 1 p.m. hour, accounting for 12% of the system load.

Additionally, on March 12, both behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter solar resources produced 3,832 megawatts at 12 p.m., contributing to 21% of the system load.

The significant increase in renewable energy generation highlights New York’s progress towards achieving its ambitious clean energy goals. The state aims to transition to an emission-free electric system by 2040, requiring a threefold increase in clean energy supply.

Rich Dewey, president and CEO of NYISO, emphasized the importance of additional generation and transmission infrastructure to meet rising demand and maintain grid reliability as the state continues to advance its clean energy transition.
