Kenya’s REREC Announces Sh2.1 Billion Plan to Power 14,500 Households

The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) in Kenya has announced plans to provide electricity to over 14,500 households in the Mount Kenya region.

REREC has allocated Sh2.1 billion to enhance power connections for households and public facilities, including schools, hospitals, and markets, according to Africa Energy Portal.

At the launch of the Rugongo Ruraya power project in Kigumo sub-county, REREC Director Mark Nderitu revealed that the program will benefit the counties of Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, and Marsabit.

In Murang’a, Nderitu stated that REREC aims to connect more than 6,000 rural households to electricity.

“Sh434 million will be used in Murang’a County for 87 power projects to achieve last-mile electricity connections. These projects are at various stages of completion, and by the next financial year, all 6,000 households will be connected to electricity,” he added.

Nderitu also urged development partners, including the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) and county governments, to allocate funds and support electrification programs to accelerate rural electrification in priority areas.
