Saipem receives from RINA two important certifications for the methodology of qualification of the performances of subsea hydrogen pipelines. The certification will allow the use Saipem protocol for qualifying the performance of materials used in the construction of subsea hydrogen pipelines for the transportation of gaseous hydrogen, a key solution for the energy transition, Saipem said.
Italian energy engineering and construction major, said that transporting hydrogen through existing or new pipelines presents unique challenges, primarily due to the potential for material degradation.
Saipem developed a robust protocol to assess the performance of metals and welds when exposed to hydrogen, ensuring pipeline compatibility during both construction and operation, it said in a press release.
The acknowledgements received from RINA add to Saipem’s track record of 65 years of offshore activity for the transportation of hydrocarbons and attest to the company’s ability to plan, realize and to also install pipelines for the transportation of hydrogen.
Saipem is a global leader in the engineering and construction of major projects for the energy and infrastructure sectors, both offshore and onshore.
