Ghana’s LPG Marketers Boycott Sage Petroleum, Blue Ocean Terminals Amid CRM Dispute

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Marketers Companies Association of Ghana has announced a halt of business relations with Sage Petroleum (Quantum Terminal) and Blue Ocean, two prominent LPG loading terminals located in Tema, Greater Accra.

In a directive issued by Mallam Bukari Amadu, Chairman of the LPG Marketers Companies Association, the Association instructed its members and the Gas Tanker Drivers Association to halt all transactions with the two terminals, effective Monday, August 12, 2024. The communication urged tanker drivers not to accept any loading invitations from Sage Petroleum or Blue Ocean depots.

The letter emphasized the Association’s commitment to protecting indigenous businesses, safeguarding over 10,000 Ghanaian jobs, and defending the $400 million investments made by local entrepreneurs over the past three decades. The move is described as a defensive measure against what the Association perceives as “foreign aggression.”

While the specific reasons for the boycott remain unclear, sources told Energy News Africa that the decision is linked to the two companies’ involvement in the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) program. Reportedly, Sage Petroleum and Blue Ocean have registered new businesses and are aggressively expanding into the LPG distribution sector, raising concerns among local marketers.

The LPG Marketers Companies Association claims it has repeatedly sought inclusion in the CRM program by offering its extensive distribution network, consisting of 800 gas stations, for retailing CRM cylinders. However, the Association asserts that its requests have been consistently rejected by the regulatory authority.
