Germany’s cabinet has approved the reactivation of on-reserve lignite-fired power plants from October to the end of March 2024.
This move aims to address the scarcity of natural gas this winter in the country, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and reduced gas imports. Despite the easing of gas bottlenecks due to new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal deliveries, coal-fired power plants will be reactivated.
The government plans to propose measures by next summer to offset the increased carbon dioxide emissions resulting from these plants’ operation this winter, as reported by Reuters.
