French senate committee, has advised on the ban of the import of Russian liquefied natural gas as soon as possible.The suggestion which is seen as a big one, with France been Europe’s biggest importer of Russian LNG so far this year, followed by Spain and Belgium, according to ship-tracking data on Bloomberg.
“Our country must include Russian LNG in energy products under European sanctions and stop imports of Russian LNG as soon as possible,” the senate Inquiry commitee stated.
The committee also advised the French government to try and gain shares in energy company TotalEnergies SE that would give it veto rights against asset sales and large shareholder changes.
The French oil major has been in the spotlight in recent weeks after its Chief Executive Officer Patrick Pouyanne said that the group might list in New York — alongside Paris and other European stock exchanges — to attract US investors with a greater appetite for fossil fuels, compared to European shareholders which are increasingly focused on environmental metrics.
The government doesn’t have to accept recommendations from the committee but they help inform policy-making.
