South Africa’s state power utility Eskom will delay the closure of some of its coal-fired power plants until 2030, Chief Executive Dan Marokane announced at an energy conference in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Eskom had earlier informed Reuters that the ongoing power supply crisis in the country made it “nearly impossible” to decommission its Camden, Grootvlei, and Hendrina (CGH) coal stations over the next few years as initially planned. The technical and political economy constraints have necessitated this decision.
“Eskom intends to delay the shutdown of the CGH plants until March 2030 and to manage its carbon reduction targets through fleet-wide initiatives,” Marokane said.
The decision comes as Eskom grapples with maintaining a stable power supply while balancing the need to reduce carbon emissions.
