South Africa’s government has announced the appointment of Dan Marokane as the next Chief Executive Officer of state power firm Eskom. Marokane, who brings extensive experience from senior positions at Eskom, including Head of Group Capital, is set to rejoin the company by March 31, 2023, Reuters reported.
Marokane, who has been acting-CEO at sugar producer Tongaat Hulett since February, will be tasked with addressing the challenges at Eskom, which has struggled to maintain a consistent power supply in Africa’s most industrialized economy, with households and businesses experiencing up to 10 hours of daily power outages, marking the worst on record.
“He will hit the ground running. That is what Eskom and South Africa need right now,” stated Mteto Nyati, Chairman of Eskom’s board of directors, highlighting the urgency of addressing the power crisis.
Eskom has been without a permanent CEO since February when former CEO Andre de Ruyter departed, leading to Calib Cassim taking over as interim Chief Financial Officer. The appointment of Marokane is seen as a crucial step in navigating Eskom through its financial and operational challenges.
